Windows 7 can not open exe files / programs

September 5th, 2011

In windows 7 if you can not open exe files / programs properly, and the symptom is after you open the exe files or programs, system will give you a “Open with” prompt to let you choose an application to open this files or programs.

Normally the reason is your exe file association was changed, and just follow below steps to check and fix this problem.

1.Open a command prompt.(Click on Start,go to All Programs / Accessories ,right-click Command Prompt and click Run as administrator)

2.In the Command Prompt windows, type assoc | find “exe” then press Enter to check if your exe association was changed. If the value of .exe is not  exefile, pls type assoc .exe=exefile and press Enter to restore your exe association.(See screenshot)

3.Reboot and try again.
