How to setup remote desktop in windows 7

May 12th, 2009

With Remote Desktop Connection, you can access a computer running Windows from another computer running Windows that’s connected to the same network or to the Internet. For example, you can use all of your work computer’s programs, files, and network resources from your home computer, and it’s just like you’re sitting in front of your computer at work.

Below will give you a step by step guide about how to setup remote desktop and how to connect to a remote desktop.

Setup remote desktop in Windows 7

1.Go to Control Panel, and select System

cpsystem2.In the new window click Advanced System settings.

adsyssettings3.Go to the Remote tab,and check Allow connections only from computers running Remote Desktop with Network Level Authentication.

Note:Of course you can select Allow connections from computers running any version of Remote Desktop to allow people using any version of Remote Desktop or RemoteApp to connect to your computer. This is a good choice if you don’t know the version of Remote Desktop Connection that other people are using, but it is less secure than the third option.

4.Click Select users… to add user accounts who have the right to connect to Remote Desktop on this computer

addusers4.Click OK 3 times to finish the setting

Connect to a Remote Desktop

Just go to Start (the Orb) ,input “Remote desktop” in the search field, then click  Remote Desktop Connection

rmconnectionThen input the ip address or hostname of the computer you want to connect to,click connect then input the username and password. Now you have connected to this remote desktop, good lucks!

To check your IP address do the following:

-Click Start and go to “All Programs”
-Go to “Accessories” and click on “Command Prompt”
-When the command prompt appears simply type: “ipconfig” and click enter

Your IP address will be listed as the second item on the list.

For those with W7 home, there is a hack that seems to activate the RDP server part. It can be downloaded from and was created by untermensch666.

For educational purposes I tried it out on my Win7 Home Premium 64bit box and lo and behold I was able to RDP into it from my workstation. Even in concurrent mode.

Note, this is not supported by MS and may break at any time by installing a security update or service pack.

How can I RDC to more than one computer on my network? I would like to be able to choose which computer I RDC into. I have each computer on my network using a static ip address, and I have the router port forwarding to each one, but I can’t figure out how to address the remote laptop that is connecting to my network to choose the correct port for the RDC connection. Thanks for your help!

Hello, to all the folks above, yes, Win7 Home does allow hosting RDCs. For home netwokrs, you will prob have to use the IP addr of the box i/o the DNS name, but it works.

My problem is that alrhough I can RDC Win7Ultimate–>Win7Home, I can’t Win7Home–>Win7Ultimate; any suggestions? I keep getting that annoying NetBIOS error 4321 in my Event Viewer on Win7Home when attempting. Thank you!
